Colour mixing specialist Opaltone has started shipping its new proofer after months of beta testing, including at Sydney-based scratch-card specialist Scientific Games Products.

The VK RIP inkjet proofing system can run any CMYK and spot colour files, colour correct and has dot gain built into its profiles.

Printing an A3 proof on Opaltone's premium proofing paper using 100% ink coverage costs only $2.

Opaltone has targeted the system at designers, brand managers, pre-press companies and in-house departments, instant print shops and photographers.

Its designers/brand managers package costs $9,850, while the pre-press/printers package costs $14,850, including extra software for Esko Artpro.

Scientific Games Products has been beta testing the equipment for the past 10 months and interested parties can view the system in action there.

"Now we output a contract quality proof in 10 minutes compared to two hours with the previous system," said SGP operations manager Thana Muhunthan.

"We are not only saving a lot of money on the upfront purchase but also a significant saving on the per proof cost."

Opaltone has beta sites around the world, including two sites in Sydney, five in Europe (Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Russia, Belgium) and nine in the Americas.

Further beta sites are planned, including two more in the US, two in Canada and four more in Mexico.

Opaltone Australasia managing director Steve Holman said the latest install was for Pepsico in Mexico.

"We have a mixture of consumer product companies, pre-press companies, and printers. It is suitable for any of these purposes.

"It does what the high-end system can do, but at a much lower cost to the user. The system includes our VK RIP, our inks and media," he added.
