SOS Print and Media signed up for Ricoh C900, which had reached more than 300,000 impressions since it was brought in on trial.

Director Michael Schulz (pictured) told ProPrint that the machine was deployed in November as a back-up to the company's Xeikon 5000 press, but has gradually been taking on more colour printing.

The C900 is essentially taking over from an Océ 520 laser printer, which has been kept on the floor to run proofs.

"The Xeikon is in its fourth year, and it is printing well over 1.5 million impressions a month," Schulz said.

"It's got great quality, great everything. But we needed a back-up machine, you can't have just one production colour machine," he added.

After evaluating several competitors, Schulz was attracted to the C900's "reliability", as well as Ricoh's service offering.

"Ricoh's service response time is one hour, which is pretty spectacular," he said.

Kathy Wilson, Ricoh Australia general manager for business solutions and production, told ProPrint that the C900 was an "ideal fit" for SOS's printing requirements.

"The Ricoh Pro C900 is being very well received throughout the Australian market," she said.

SOS operates out of sites in Sydney and Brisbane with a combined turnover of $37m and a staff headcount of 170.

In addition to its digital operations, the company houses an offset division, which includes full size 10-colour Heidelberg and Akiyama presses.
