ProPrint Poll: Canon and Océ

ProPrint Poll: Canon and Océ
by Staff Writers
Nov 20, 2009
Find more like: Canon | Océ | digital | acquisition | sale | acquire | deal | merger

Vote in our weekly poll about Canon's bid to purchase Océ. We're asking 'Will a united Canon and Océ be good for the industry?"

Scroll down to find the poll on the right-hand side of the page, and have your say!

Last time, we asked: "In light of the rumours around Heidelberg and manroland, do you think any other companies in print will merge in the near future?"

The results were:

33%: Yes. If even the giants heading that way, it's the wave of the future.

5%: No. There's little need for consolidation now that the global economy is improving.

50%: Yes. Joining forces is the only way some companies will be able to survive.

12%: No. There was never any chance of them merging.

This was news that took everybody by surprise. Yes, definitely good for the industry as it means more choice and opportununities for customers of both companies!

Inky, I fink they meant 'more choice for Canon's and Oce's cutomers.' I.e. Oce customers will be able to offer Canon kit and Canon will be able to offer high volume kit, which they have never had before. That's the way I read it anyway, and I don't like Kool Aid either! The only similarly-named thing I like is Cool Aida!We have that much in common.

So less is more? My head hurts. For what its worth, its a good strategic move by Canon - while the big 3 (Fuji X / HP and Kodak) are hurting they make a nice growth play to enter the hi end of the market. However, the danger is that they become a clone of the big 3 and start using terms like 'paradigm shifting'. I wish i'd bought Oce shares 10 years ago!

Oce shares 10 years ago were worth 18 Euros today 8 - takes a lot of skill to do that to a company. My bet is the brand has 18 months of life left, Canon sell via agents, Oce are direct - pretty clear who will be losing out of that
