Fuji Xerox Australia and RMIT this week launched a managed print centre at the University’s Brunswick campus, which caters to the school’s graphic design students.

The new print centre is one of four Fuji Xerox-managed sites at RMIT, with a service hub located at the university's Bundoora campus, and a student copy centre and new customer service hub located at the Melbourne CBD campus. The new Brunswick site and CBD customer service hub effectively replace services offered by a former site in the CBD, with Steve Jordan, Victoria State Manager for Fuji Xerox Australia, describing the transition as "seamless".

RMIT vice-president of resources Stephen Somogyi officially opened the Brunswick facility, saying that "Fuji Xerox has demonstrated its expertise and dedication to RMIT through its execution of the managed print service and willingness to help our students."

The Brunswick site, which is equipped with Fuji Xerox Nuvera 288 and Nuvera 144 production systems, is also much smaller than its CBD predecessor.

"Using modern devices and workflow techniques, Fuji Xerox is able to provide the same capability and high standards of service with a smaller footprint, which reduces the University's real estate overhead," claimed Jordan.

In March this year, RMIT signed an agreement with Canon Australia that saw the company donate an imagePRESS C1 digital press to the university, whilst Océ Australia donated a CPS900 Platinum digital colour printer in May.

Ummmm....isnt this a case of Fuji Xerox competing with it's own customers? Shouldn't a printing company be offering a sourcing service to RMIT, and Fuji Xerox be a supplier to that printer? If Heidelberg started printing commercial work at their own factories we would all be blowing up deluxe! This is something that needs waaaaaaay more discussion. If was in the market for a commercial digital press, i would be striking a line through Fuji Xerox straight away....

I'm also astounded at the lack of outrage Mighty Art - kudos to you for sticking to your guns. Maybe if clients like RMIT and others like them (UBS for example) were exposed to the 'true' commercial market it might engender a greater respect for print and print specialists - rather than continue to commoditise our products and knowledge. There is a Proprint article crying to be written about this, but i reckon Haymarket don't have the bottle as Fuji Xerox are a substantial advertiser.

Sales person is the winner here. If printing company can sell the concept themselves and rope in the copier supplier to supply machines it eleminates them early in the competetion. Printing companies has an advantage of working in the trade and actually doing the job so are better equipped to do the job in first place. It is just how you sell your concept. There are many examples of this happening in Australia and in US it's booming - Managed Print services.

Print is already commoditised. Let's take a moment to consider what Whirlwind, Hero, World Wide have done to print prices.
