Ricoh has deployed its first Pro C900 in Victoria, with the University of Melbourne installing the press in its Digital Print Centre.

Digital Print Centre manager Tony Bertolotti selected the C900 after conducting a personal trial which involved taking a disk with several 'typical' University images to various vendors, and asking them to simply open the files, print them and send back the end-results.

"The reason for this is that the University colour - PMS 294 - is an integral part of the University's brand," said Bertolotti. "We wanted to start with the engines that could best replicate our colour. Ricoh came out the best, within 2-5 per cent of colour accuracy."

"We wanted the best in colour," he added. "But other key factors were speed, efficiency and finishing."

Ricoh made the anouncement at a private wine tasting for its clients at its PacPrint stand yesterday. The event featured the renowned Penfolds Grange, with wine expert Nick Park (pictured) taking the audience through the history of the wine.

Park described the Grange as the "best-credentialled wine in Australia, perhaps the best-credentialled wine in the world".

"If you ever see a '57, '58 or '59 Grange, sell your photcopier and buy a bottle of it," Park remarked.

However, the wine also has its place in the printing industry, with Park claiming that all Grange labels are now laser-etched to avoid counterfeit versions of the plonk laying claim to the name.
