LIA finds itself on the map in Bathurst
Nov 24, 2008
About 40 members and guests of the NSW division of the LIA visited the Department of Lands and Information in Bathurst recently, to see how the department has morphed into much more than a printer and repository for maps and land titles.
The DLI has also developed a website similar in scope to Google Earth, “but better”, said Stephen McRobert. This is used by numerous state and federal departments.
And of course the visitors were taken on a tour of the department’s prepress and print rooms, with a four-colour Mitsubishi press, installed about four years ago, taking pride of place.
The department has also taken on mail fulfilment contracts, including a large contract for Valnet. This includes 800,000 inserts which must be mailed every January.
Stephen McRobert paid respect to the employees of the department who, he said, had embraced the many changes that the department had been through.
In the evening Stephen McRobert presented an entertaining snapshot of the department’s history, and its plans for the future. Warwick Roden gave a humorous and enlightening presentation on the travails of being the owner of a small business in the print industry, and Ben Hickey reviewed drupa 2008.
Greg Grace of Heidelberg presented a selection of print samples showing the latest developments in Heidelberg press technology. Anna Moran, an employee at DLI and the Heidelberg/LIA Graduate of the Year, spoke about her experiences working at the department.
