Printing Industries is encouraging Australian SME printers to apply for grants to reduce their carbon footprint under the federal government’s ‘Re-tooling for Climate Change Program’.

The program offers grants ranging from $10,000 to $500,000 with the aim of encouraging businesses to initiate projects that improve the energy or water efficiency of their production processes. Applications for grants close on October 20.

Printing Industries has touted the scheme as something which can not only address environmental concerns, but also had a financial benefit.

"With the final report of the Garnaut Climate Change Review estimating that retail electricity prices will increase between 40 and 70 per cent by 2020 under various scenarios, there is now a cost imperative to produce in the most energy efficient manner as feasible,” said Hagop Tchamkertenian, Printing Industries’ national manager for policy and government affairs.

Tchamkertenian added that Printing Industries was seeking additional support from the federal government for small and medium sized businesses who will be impacted by the proposed emissions trading scheme but may not qualify for government support.

"While programs such as the Re-tooling for Climate Change and Climate Ready are a good start, the fact that the funding is competitive and merit based means that many businesses will miss out on funding," he said.

To be eligible for a grant, businesses need to demonstrate they can cover at least two-thirds of the cost of the project, with the federal grant covering no more than one-third of the full cost.

Some of the projects mentioned by Printing Industries include stormwater capture and improving water recycling, improving insulation and recovering waste heat, and the adoption of energy efficient manufacturing tools and processes.

whatever happened to "global warming"? did the morons that be realise north america and europe, are having the coldest winter in decades, that they cant pull the wool over peoples eyes for ever, that the climates are well beyond the capacity of mere mortals to change, so they've re-worded the term to global warming? i dont understand how educated men and women cant see through this sham.but i cant see how the same type of people can join cults like scientology either. go figure. and what exactly are "climate ready grants? really grown men perpetuating this myth, you should be ashamed of yourselves. piltdown man had nothing on this farce. please.

Mythbuster, what planet are you on? Global warming and Co2 buildup in the atmosphere are facts. Measured globally (not just N America and Europe), the planet we inhabit is warming and has been since the industrial revolution. Mankind's mismanagement of the environment is causing wild swings in weather but overall warmer - you conveniently did not mention the awful Victorian bushfires caused by record temperatures. Just like Piltdown Man - your argument against the need to limit greenhouse emissions is fraudulent.

Take the emotion out of the argument and see the facts... The government is handing out money to improve businesss processes and make your company's offering more attractive to customers - both existing and potential. No point carrying on like schoolkids debating whether climate change is real or imagined... what's real is a troubled print industry that is being offered the chance to 'green up' - and make us appear less like polluting dinosaurs and more like a responsible industry who are prepared to adjust to the times.
