The epitaphs for print will have to be shelved once again, with two new magazines set to hit the Australian market in the coming months.

Dennis Publishing announced this week that the first local issue of The Week would go on sale on October 31st, whilst Fairfax have announced it will be launching an Australian version of Sport and Style, which will appear as a monthly insert in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age from February next year.

The Week, a current affairs magazine which summarises the week’s news and opinion from other publications, has proven to be a popular format in the UK and US, where it attracts sales of 150,000 and 500,000 copies respectively. Publisher Felix Dennis is keen to replicate this success in Australia, with a 35-page local edition set to appear in newsagents every Friday.

"The Week is perhaps the best-read magazine on the planet," Dennis said in a statement.

"Its unique blend of information, opinion and entertainment has driven its extraordinary growth in the UK and the USA and I have no doubt that our Australian edition will work the same magic."

Dennis is aiming for a circulation of 50,000 within two years, with the magazine also set to be distributed in New Zealand, Hong, Kong and Singapore.

Meanwhile, Fairfax’s Sport and Style will be based on a French version that appears in L’Equipe, with an initial print run of 360,000 touted for the Australian edition.

Targeted at high-earning males and with a focus on sports and fashion, the magazine will be sized at 300 x 225 mm, saddle-stitched, and printed on 80gsm gloss stock with a 170 gsm cover. It is expected to be between 90-140 pages in length.
