A monthly round-up of the comings and goings in the printing and related industries from Henry Mendelson.

Another GASAA first
Enterprising GASAA executive director, Garry Knespal, has scored an international first, aligning the Australian organisation with Ugra, the Swiss Centre of Competence for Media and Printing Technology (technical and standards-based research for the graphic arts industry) by signing an exclusive agreement to promote and audit Ugra PSO Certification in Australia and New Zealand.

Significantly, while Ugra is represented by many companies around the world, this is the first time it has aligned itself with an industry organisation to conduct audits on its behalf.

And while gasaa'ing:
The Association's Environmental Management Course leading to ISO 14001 certification is already well and truly up and running with seven firms having started the Sydney EM Course. Registrations for Melbourne and Brisbane firms are now open and GASAA's eager to gauge interest in the programme north and south. Arrangements for other States to follow.

GASAA's website gets you the details.

What can you say about your website?
Some helpful hints on handling a company's website emerged recently - - questions such as: just what is your website offering to the visitor? Is there a definitive offer or is it just chest beating?

The next and most contentious comment came via the oh-so often conflict between the airy-fairy creative side of things and those on the side of reality, namely - - stay away from bells and whistles.

Fact is that animation looks cool, but slows things down (just how many visitors to those oh-so beautiful but over complicated sites choose to "Skip the Intro"?) Another "must" is the need to pay special attention to navigation and interactivity and the need to put "calls to action" on every page.

Needless to say, it is imperative to keep the site up to date (have a look at any half dozen printers' sites today and join me in being appalled at some of their dates of origin). Then there are such obvious givens as using response forms to encourage interaction and maybe offer credit card capability.

Study gives nod to inkjet
With the recent drupa dubbed, among other things, "the inkjet drupa", all the indicators are that inkjet has finally come into the mainstream. With the display market leading the charge, the technology seems set to conquer other fields. A recent Print Industries Market Information and Research Organization (PRIMIR) study, Trends in Inkjet Technologies, reviews current and emerging inkjet technologies and addresses growth trends and forecasts for adoption of inkjet technologies in selected markets for the next three years. More information can be gleaned from Jackie Bland at jbland@primir.org.
