When automation was introduced to the bindery, it revolutionised the process. Historically it was a highly skilled, time-consuming operation, but job set-ups on many modern stitching lines can be performed at the touch of a button. And with shorter run lengths and quicker turnaround times being demanded by customers, "click data is becoming more important and more prevalent", says John Gissing, technical product manager at Muller Martini.

Plates & plate processors

14 Aug 2008 |  Nosmot Gbadamosi  |
Plate technology is a hot topic at the moment following the launch of chemistry-free violet technology at Drupa, which levelled the playing field with thermal and reignited the debate over which technology is best: thermal or violet.
Col-Tec Signature Collator

Col-Tec Signature Collator

14 Aug 2008 |  Nosmot Gbadamosi  |
A flat-sheet gatherer that could also collate folded sections and books was unheard of when the Col-Tec Signature collator launched in 2002. First shown at Graph Expo in Chicago, it took a while for the market to be convinced of the benefits of such an unusual device. As a result initial uptake was slow - the manufacturer produced only one Signature collator for every five conventional flat-sheet collators it manufactured, but today 50 per cent of its production are Signatures.

Building on from the Speedmaster 74 that was launched just before it, the Heidelberg Speedmaster (SM) 52 claimed many firsts. Launched at drupa 1995, it was the first B3 machine ever to have autoplate according to Richard Bradley, Heidelberg marketing manager for the Sheetfed 35x50.

An automated perfect binder with a high-end signature recognition system, barely two years old and 30 per cent less than its original value. It sounds too good to be true doesn't it? Well, at the time of writing, this tempting offer was being advertised on used machinery service website PressXchange, alongside numerous other post-press machines promising major savings on brand new equivalents.

Platesetters: flexo, newspaper & VLF

While there have been several recent product launches in the field of large-format platesetters, the technology remains pretty much unchanged. It’s a mature market and Guy Elliott, Heidelberg’s UK product manager for Prinect workflow and CTP, notes that the main areas of development are in the plates themselves.

There seems to be a lot of 'mine's bigger than yours' going on in the B1 market at the moment. As far as the leading offset press players are concerned, size matters and at this year's drupa, many had their latest monster machines on show.

Back in 2004, British music magazine NME produced a special fully lenticular 3D cover and back page for its annual Cool List issue. It was eye-catching and featured musician Pete Doherty strumming an electric guitar. Fans were wowed by the moving effect, especially since the musician was photographed separately to the guitar.

How do you achieve the same quality as offset on a flexographic press? This is the conundrum many packaging printers are exploring. "Printers are experimenting with printing directly onto corrugated board to achieve high-quality results rather than printing on an offset sheet and then transferring it to the corrugated card," says a spokesperson for Bobst.
HighWater Platinum 2218

HighWater Platinum 2218

2 Jul 2008 |  Nosmot Gbadamosi  |
After the successful launch of an entry-level 4-up violet platesetter, Highwater introduced a 2-up option, the Platinum 2218, in 2000. "We realised there was a market for 2-up from users that didn't want polyester and were looking for a [small-format] metal platesetter," says Peter Flynn, sales director at HighWater (UK). Targeted at printers looking for an affordable violet platesetter, it was an immediate success and more than 700 were sold worldwide before production ceased in 2006. "For a year before the Prosetter was launched, we were selling it to Heidelberg," adds Flynn.

Pre-flighting, workflow and RIPs

2 Jul 2008 |  Nosmot Gbadamosi  |
Making sure a range of devices handle data correctly to deliver a quality printed product can be a tricky business. But with today's pre-flighting software, workflows and RIPs this should be less of a problem, as the technology is advanced enough to warrant a flawless production process.
